Rock the Runway Returns with a Bold New Beat

Posted On: Sep 22, 2025

Pensacola Opera has never been afraid of breaking tradition, but this year’s Rock the Runway: Amped is turning the dial all the way up. Part high-fashion runway show, part rock concert, part opera spectacle, this electrified production promises a night where art forms collide in the most unexpected way.

Rock the Runway is back for its third year and bigger than ever, moving from the intimate Vinyl Music Hall to the grand Saenger Theatre for an unforgettable Foo Foo Festival debut. “We’ve outgrown our past venue,” says Chandra McKern, General Director of Pensacola Opera. “So we thought, what better way to take this event to the next level than to blow it out of the water as part of Foo Foo Festival at the Saenger?”

This year’s event marks a groundbreaking partnership with White Tie Rock Ensemble, the powerhouse local group with a devoted following across the Gulf Coast. Known for their full-throttle concerts, White Tie will be onstage all night long, providing the soundtrack as nearly 60 models take over the Saenger’s aisles and stage. “They’ve never partnered with anyone in Pensacola before—we’re the first,” Chandra shares. “Their shows usually sell out with a thousand people or more, so bringing them into this collaboration is really exciting.”

The concept goes far beyond a fashion show. It’s more akin to performance art where opera heroines, couture, and rock anthems share the spotlight. Each of the eight looks is inspired by an operatic diva or divo. When Carmen, Tosca, or Cinderella steps out in full operatic costume—created by Glenn Avery Breed of Wardrobe Witchery, Pensacola Opera’s nationally acclaimed costume designer—it sets the tone for a lineup of models styled in looks inspired by that character. Six local boutiques are part of the mix, each presenting eight to 10 looks that fuse Pensacola fashion with the drama of opera. “It’s visually stunning and artistically inspiring, but it’s not your typical fashion show,” Chandra says. “It’s fashion theater. Opera and fashion have always influenced each other, and this is a fresh way of exploring that relationship.”

The music lineup adds even more edge. White Tie is pulling from their expansive songbook—there’s Queen, heavy metal, and everything in between—for a mashup that keeps the energy high all night. It’s a different spin from past years, leaning into White Tie’s signature sound while still nodding to opera’s grand tradition.

Audiences can expect a one-of-a-kind experience no matter where they sit. Orchestra-level seats offer the best view as models weave through the aisles and across the stage, while balcony seats are available at a lower price point for those who just want to soak up the sound and spectacle.

And while the show itself is the star, Rock the Runway: Amped also serves a larger purpose: to expand the reach of opera in Pensacola. “Events like this bring in a much younger, more diverse audience than our mainstage productions,” Chandra explains. “We’re always looking for creative ways to invite new people into the opera world. If they come for fashion and rock this time, maybe they’ll come back for La Bohème or Carmen later.”

With more than 1,500 seats at the Saenger, this year’s Rock the Runway is set to be Pensacola Opera’s most ambitious fashion-meets-music experiment yet. As Chandra puts it: “Foo Foo Festival expects creative and different—and we’re not going to disappoint.”
