Put Yourself Out There; You’re the Star of Choir! Choir! Choir!

Date Posted: Oct 04, 2019

This year at Foo Foo Fest YOU are the star of the show at Choir!Choir!Choir! And you don’t even have to audition! All you have to do is show up to the Rex Theatre, trade-in your ticket for a lyric sheet, pick your section from highs, mids or lows and sing. It’s sure to be an evening you’ll never forget!

Building Community through Song

Daveed Goldman and Nobu Adilman (aka “DaBu”) began C!C!C! as a weekly drop-in singing event years ago in February 2011. Daveed and Nobu wanted to make each performance a very inclusive evening at one of their favorite bars in Toronto, with their focus on singing, comedy and community building. What followed was more successful than anything DaBu could have dreamed. Participants receive their lyric sheet at the door, DaBu teaches them the arrangement and the performance is put on YouTube. Their YouTube page has gathered an immense following in the hundreds of thousands, while the sing-alongs got so popular that the duo had to host multiple evenings a week. Even the shyest vocalists belt their hearts out. For participants that have never been in a chorus before, it can be mindblowing to learn that by becoming vulnerable, you open yourself up to situations that can lead to great achievements.

But most importantly, C!C!C! grew into a force for community building through music and song. The chorus has performed in holes, on hills and on the biggest of stages like Carnegie Hall and Radio City Music Hall. Famous singers and songwriters have joined our amateurs in performing their work and that of others. Singing shoulder-to-shoulder with greats like David Byrne, Patti Smith, Rufus Wainwright and Kathleen Edwards to a raucous crowd and applause sure is likely to boost a new singer’s confidence, and show that anyone can get on stage and wow a crowd.

Another way that C!C!C! helps foster a community is through its foundation which was launched in 2016 in association with the Toronto Foundation to formalize their deep commitment to fundraising activities. “C!C!C! Sings for Syria” raised $70,000 and sponsored two families to live in Toronto, and “25 Days of Charity!Charity!Charity!” raised $50,000 for 25 local, national and international organizations during the Christmas season. Daveed and Nobu are proud of the community they have built through song and welcoming anyone who wishes to participate.

It’s Time to Sing, Pcola!

The Choral Society of Pensacola is proud to bring DaBu to the white sands and blue waters of Pensacola. Join DaBu at the Rex Theater at 7:30 p.m. on November 6. Be sure to listen for the evening’s selections so you can familiarize yourself with the music before the event starts. You don’t have to be able to read music, but you do need a ticket! Songs can range from classics like The Beatles, David Bowie, Leonard Cohen and Patti Smith, to new hits like Lady Gaga, Justin Bieber and Taylor Swift. Now go out there and break a leg!
