Science on the Street

Date Posted: Jul 20, 2015

The Pensacola MESS (Math, Engineering, Science & Stuff) Hall is bringing the MESS to the streets with “Science on the Street,” an interactive science experience.

This exciting and educational event will line the streets of downtown Pensacola with activities that will be available for the entire duration of the festival, 24 hours a day.

Event-goers can take a stroll down the Planet Walk, a 1 km pathway that provides participants with a sense of scale of the solar system and information about the planets.

Guests can even become a scientific tool to learn firsthand about the science behind optical illusions, perception, and balance.

Guests are invited to share their discoveries through group exhibits that require the help of family and friends working together. These include a musical bench which will emit different musical sounds depending on the degree and type of contact between two individuals.

Musical bench

This musical bench was built during the Pensacola MESS Hall’s “Maker Sunday” program. This middle school and up program provides participants support for creating their own projects, particularly focused on electronics. The electronics design was inspired by a similar bench build by the Exploratorium in San Francisco.

Cylindrical mirror

The cylindrical mirror is an example of anamorphic art. You’ll be able to generate your own anamorphic images, including using a drawing program such as Photoshop.

Back to Back

This station takes advantage of one of the many challenges for human balance related to maintaining center of mass over the support area.

Hybrid Photo

Hybrid photos have been investigated by Dr. Aude Oliva at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in the context of computer image processing. You’ll be able to use a photo-editing program to create your own.
