Mucha: Master Artist of Art Nouveau

Mucha: Master Artist of Art Nouveau (Selections from the Rowe Collection)

The Pensacola Museum of Art is hosting a completely unique exhibition featuring the graphic art of Art Nouveau master Alphonse Mucha. As an introduction to the exhibition there will be a number of original prints by Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec and Katsushika Hokusai.

This never-before-seen exhibition, “Mucha: Master Artist of Art Nouveau (Selections from the Rowe Collection),” celebrates the rich, vivid prints of Alphonse Mucha that characterize the style of the Art Nouveau period.

Many of the pieces that will be exhibited come from Mucha’s period in Paris after he reached international success. He was known for creating several theater posters for stage and film star Sara Bernhardt, known as “the most famous actress the world has ever known.” His work was so distinctive that it became known as “le style Mucha.”

This exhibit is a once in a lifetime experience because it is chiefly composed of the private collection of Pensacola resident Dr. Patrick M. Rowe, one of the renowned collectors of Mucha in the U.S. This will be a rare opportunity to experience the work of such a historically important artist.

Among the 125 works on display, there will be original posters, magazines, menus, currency, stamps, book illustrations and postcards.

Included within the exhibition will be original posters on loan from the private collection of Jack Rennert (published Mucha scholar and New York City gallery owner), works from the Tampa Museum of Art and prints from the Boca Raton Museum of Art.

A reception for this exhibition will be held on Oct. 23. An exhibition catalog will be published by PMA and will be available for sale at the Museum Gift Shop.
