Wandering Without Purpose

Presented by

Pensacola State College

Austrian/English philosopher Karl Popper characterized Zen philosophy as “Wandering without Purpose” – PSC Foo Foo Festival artist, Relja Penezic has borrowed this line to describe his life’s work. 30-40 of Penezic’s paintings will be installed on 4 gallery walls in a very minimalistic way – same height and equal space between them and in a sequence suggesting they are all part of one larger narrative. Two video works will be projected on free standing walls in the middle of the gallery. Videos will be treated like paintings – fixed compositions, subject matter related to paintings and motion and sound won’t be time based in the sense that they won’t have a beginning or end.

For the complementary sound installation performing artist, Victoria Jordanova will create a composition that will include layers of whispers, most of them unintelligible, playing on ceiling speakers – a cloud like constant sound presence enveloping the gallery. As a part of the site specific piece a microphone will be placed in the gallery with instructions for the visitors to whisper something into it and a recording of it would be included as an additional layer to the installation as the loops are recorded and processed live, allowing attendees to become more fully engaged with the exhibition – part of the art. The live loops playback will allow for the chance occurrences among the layers. Victoria will also create soundtracks for two video projections which will play on projectors speakers quietly enough so it will become prominent only when viewer approaches projection.

Artist lecture discussing the exhibited work as well as historical influences and cultural context, including a walkthrough the exhibition with discussions and Q&A on individual pieces.
